Estimates suggest that around 1.5 million South African children suffer from malnutrition. Unemployment, a social welfare system under pressure and high HIV/AIDS infection rates all contribute to food insecurity in communities.

The Amy Biehl Foundation develops and empowers youth in the townships to contribute to community-building and so reduce crime, violence and food insecurity. This project will establish 2 environmental clubs and food gardens in Western Cape townships, training 250 young people and a care taker in food gardening and other environmental issues.
